Amazing Venues for Sport in the UK

By Steve Alexander

With the Olympics taking place in London this summer, the attention of the world will be on the English capital. However, there are various other top sporting venues across the country that should definitely be checked out if you didn't manage to get tickets in London. We take a look at some of the very best.

As you'd expect from the birthplace and training location of Torvill and Dean, Nottingham is home to the National Ice Centre. This 43 million pound centre was the UK's first twin Olympic-sized ice rink facility and is also the home of the Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating squad and the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team.

Footy fans certainly won't be disappointed in Manchester as much of the conversation in the football-mad city is about football. With a capacity of 75, 811 as well as an award-winning museum, Old Trafford, or the Theatre of Dreams as it is also known, is the second largest football stadium in England after Wembley.

Some of the legends of the club such as former striker Andrew Cole can also take you on a tour around the stadium. Alternatively, you can catch another impressive sporting match by taking the short walk to the nearby Lancashire Cricket Club. Manchester City are not to be outdone though as their Etihad Stadium is the fifth largest in the Premier League with a capacity of 47,805.

In addition to a rich footballing history, which boasts many highs and lows - the latter most notably including the Hillsborough stadium disaster - the City of Steel is actually represented in every major team sport played in England, including ice hockey, basketball and speedway. The Don Valley athletics stadium, which has a capacity of up to 50,000 and the Crucible Theatre, which has been the official home of the World Snooker Championships since 1977, help to further cement this.
