Should Digital Printing And Packaging Be Performed In House?

By Karla R. Montenegro

Companies and manufacturers representing a wide variety of industries are forever looking into new ways to cut costs and flatten their operations, with one of the newest and most exciting ways doing their own digital printing wrapping and packaging their products. And incredibly fast and cost effective way to transfer photo quality images on to packages and wrapping film, digital printing is also referred to as die-cutting, film seaming, slitting, UV coating, and printing shrink labels, flexo printing, corona treating, laminating and creating pressure sensitive labels.

In the past, most companies did not do this work on their own and instead chose to put the services out to bid for packaging contractors to perform to the manufacturer's specifications. Although, a solid number of manufacturers have traditionally preferred this method since it allowed them to maintain focused on their core business of manufacturing these days companies are doing nearly all that they can to reduce costs to help them compete in an ultra competitive market.

Actually, the need to be competitive is probably more important and difficult than at any other time in the past since international borders mean less and less when it comes to the business of manufacturing. Which of course brings manufacturers back to looking at the positives and negatives of performing their own printing, wrapping, and packaging in house. Though at first blush, this professional and important printing may appear to be complicated and difficult to do correctly, when one looks at how awesomely powerful our home printers are today no one should be shocked at how easy it is to perform one's own printing in house.

When one has the opportunity to sit back and consider how much imaging and printing technology has changed and grown in recent years, it is simply amazing. This is what is allowing people to produce their own snapshots at home, just as it is what is allowing manufacturers to print and wrap their own products in house. Despite the ease and cost effectiveness of these set ups there is still a need to consult with experts at the start of the process. However, with the correct advice, there is no reason that some companies cannot do this service on their own.

This does not mean that all companies have the need or desire to do their own digital printing or wrapping. As stated above, a good number of folks just want to focus on their business and leave the printing and wrapping to others. It does not matter really, as long as the matter is totally reviewed, the proper decision is not all that tough to make.
