Radiologic Technologist: X-Rays And Beyond

By Sabrina Lamar

If you are thinking about getting into the radiology technician career, the first thing you should think about is getting your education and training. Becoming a radiology tech requires formal training and you can get this from several reputable radiology schools. And because there are so many schools to choose from, you need to make sure your choice is the best one if you want to be successful.

Just looking at the sheer number of radiology schools offering radiology training programs can be very confusing, and it does seem like each one of them are just the same. Your choice of school can affect the kind of future you will have as a radiology tech, so you need to choose well. First and foremost, your school must be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

The reason why you want to choose from radiology schools that have been accredited by the JRCERT is because this is indicative of a school's education quality. It also means that you will be on the right track in getting certified or licensed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Most importantly, better employment opportunities await those who have graduated from an accredited institution.

Even if you don't have sufficient time to attend a regular radiology school, you might be surprised to know that there are also online radiology schools that are also as good as their offline counterparts. There are also online training programs accredited by the JRCERT so make sure you enroll in those. Just remember that you still need to undergo hands-on training in order to complete your education program.

Another important factor that may want to consider is your financial capability. Some radiology schools may have more expensive tuition fees that others, but don't be discouraged if you feel financially limited because there are also schools which offer scholarship programs. In this case, you need to inquire about the requirements of each school on how you can be qualified for their scholarship program.

When canvassing for radiology schools, it is also good to consider other factors such as the success history of their graduates, course outlines, degrees offered, admission requirements, and class schedules. Choosing a school is something you must really take seriously as this can have a significant effect on your success in the future.
