What Is Low Blood Pressure?

By Shannon L Smith

If you experience a sudden spell of dizziness or you faint occasionally, it could be possible that you have low blood pressure. If you are young and healthy, you don't need to get too perturbed about it. However, it would be a good idea to consult a doctor. If you are elderly and have these symptoms, you should definitely see your doctor. Low blood pressure is the opposite of high blood pressure and is medically termed as hypotension.

The heart is a muscle that's responsible to pump the blood cells to the lungs, where they are infused with oxygen, and this refreshed blood is then pumped throughout the body.

Medical science has found a way of measuring the blood pressure and has determined that if the pressure is 90 (or less) millimeters per mercury (mm Hg) on the top of the scale, and 60 mm Hg or less on the lower end of the scale, the person has low blood pressure. The blood pressure is said to be normal if it's 120/80 or, as some experts believe, 115/75 is even better.

People who have low blood pressure generally tend to faint or have spells of dizziness. There are some common symptoms of low blood pressure like;

* Giddiness * Cold, clammy skin * Gloominess * Blurred vision * Fainting * Low energy * Queasiness * Shivering * Rapid, shallow breathing * Dehydration.

The treatment of low blood pressure may or may not be necessary. But, this is for a medical practitioner to determine. The cause of low blood pressure has to be determined and it may just be a temporary condition caused by fatigue, exercise, over eating or taking alcohol in excess.

The treatment for low blood pressure will depend on the doctor's diagnosis. In certain cases, the doctor may just monitor your blood pressure and ask you to stop taking certain medications, or may give you a clean bill of health. Remember, there are certain medicines that can cause low blood pressure.

Younger people who suffer from spells of dizziness or fainting but have no physical problems don't need to worry about low blood pressure, but they should consult a doctor. Elderly people may have low blood pressure due to a variety of interrelated problems. It can be caused due to the problem of the heart, dilution of the blood or excessive loss of blood, or if you are suffering from a disease like Parkinson's disease, diabetes or certain heart conditions.

The doctor will take your history and may suggest changes in your lifestyle or your diet or may change a medication that you are taking. The doctor may decide to monitor your condition as well. But, you must not get excessively worried as low pressure in majority of cases is not life threatening and athletes go through a normal life with low blood pressure.
