Drums are one of the world's oldest instruments. If you want to learn how to play the drums you should be able to know the different types of drums.
To recognize the Bass drum, just look for a large drum on the floor with a pedal near it.The distinctive deeper tone of the bass drum is created by stepping on the pedal. The snare drum is the small drum on a stand by itself. The wires under it known as the snares give this drum a snappy sound.Do you see a drum made up of two cymbals attached to each other? That is the hi-hat.The hi-hat, like the bass is operated by stepping on a pedal and is usually found to the left of the snare drum. The cymbals come together in a clapping motion when stepped on.
During the softer parts of the song the drummers usually keep the hi-hat closed by stepping and holding the pedal and play quiter tones on the hi-hat so the singer remains audible. The biggest and thickest cymbal on the set is the ride cymbal. The drums varying in diameter from 6 to 18 inches are the tom toms. The deeper the Tom tom, the deeper is the tone. The Tom toms are arranged around the kit in a circular fashion. The floor tom being the largest tom is not attached and comes with its own stand. The cymbals on a stand by themselves are the crash cymbals.
An important aspect in how to drum is the counting.Counting to four is a good way t o start because most basic drumming consists of four counts in every bar.To improve stick control and coordination practicing a pattern of stick exercises known as drum rudiments is a must. For now we will focus on the four basic among the several types of drum rudiments.
Usually using a practice pad or the tom and the snare the single stroke is an alternate left, right, left, right pattern.Using the bounce back motion to hit the drum once is the double stroke. To create a single full sound using two hits played very closely together is known as the flam stroke. The right hand should be higher than the left hand which is placed 2-4 inches away from the drum.To create the effect of a single sound, lower both hands at the same speed and with the right hitting louder than the left.To eventually do this with both hands try alternating the position of the left and right hands. The pattern of a paradiddle is right, left, right, right, left, right, left, left. Now there are other rudiments but these are the basic drills to be practiced in learning to play the drums.
