Taking Care Of A Shih Tzu

By Leslie Moore

A Shih Tzu is a breed of dog that is known to have a beautiful appearance because of its long hair, short body and round eyes. Because of its physical characteristics, it is considered to be a high-maintenance breed which needed a different kind of attention than other kinds of dogs. Aside from the special attention that you need to provide, the Shih Tzu being a companion dog has their own unique attitudes and you need to be aware of these if you are planning to have one in your home.

About a Shih Tzu

A Shih Tzu is ideal for pet parents who have small backyards. Since they are small and can only take little steps at a time, small apartments and houses can suit them well. Exercise is not something that an owner must worry about unlike for owners who own larger breeds. A Shih Tzu dog has a jealous nature and can easily be depressed whenever they feel that they will have to compete for your attention. Because of this, they are more probable to attack and bite small children in the house. To avoid instances like this, don't leave the pooch alone with children and teach the kids on how to be good with dogs.

Stress can cause nervousness, erratic barking and sleeplessness for Shih Tzus. Assist them on these times for them to be comfortable in the house with the other people especially if you are not around. Caring for emotional health is important for these kinds of dogs in order for them to grow healthy. When it comes to physical activities, Shih Tzu dogs love activities and sunshine. Go outside and take her for a little exercise. This is good for their sleep, muscles, heart and weight.

Maintaining a Shih Tzu

Constant grooming is one of the basic needs of a Shih Tzu. Though food is also a necessity, maintenance of their body and hair plays a big role on their health and sanitation. Regularly visit a pet store and enlist your dogs on different grooming services. You can also do it on your own provided that you do it carefully. To prevent their hair from being tangled and matted, comb their hair every day. When you discover tangles, make use of a detangling spray or just simply cut the tangled portion. Cut their hair on the faces so that it won't get into their eyes.

Regularly clean the face of a Shih Tzu with a damp wet cloth. Since they are hairy dogs, mucus and dirt can build up easily around the eyes, nose and mouth. You can also take them to a bath but their hair would require a special kind of shampoo that's designed for pooches with long hair. Food is also something that you have to be meticulous about. It is recommended by veterinarians to feed Shih Tzu dogs with high quality food. This may seem expensive but it will cost you less in the long run. Higher quality dog foods requires less feeding and it also guarantees fewer trips to the hospital and less costs for the medications.
